Canadian Authorities Crack Down on Unregistered Crypto Exchanges
Monday. July 8 at 7:30 PM
1 min. readA British Columbia Securities Commission (BCSC) panel has determined that LiquiTrade operated an illegal exchange in Canada. LiquiTrade's Latoken crypto exchange was accused of breaching Canada's Securities Act in November 2022 by processing $300 million in daily transactions for 1.5 million users. After a two-year investigation, the BCSC panel found LiquiTrade in violation of Canadian securities laws for enabling users to trade derivative investments without proper registration. Canada has already banned four crypto exchanges, while 15 authorized platforms, such as Bitbuy and Coinbase, continue to operate. LiquiTrade faces potential sanctions ranging from fines to service bans, with a final decision expected by August 14. Despite regulatory crackdowns, licensed platforms like WonderFi are seeing increased retail interest in crypto, with new user signups surging alongside Bitcoin's record price highs.
