Mt. Gox Moves 12,000 Bitcoin to New Wallet Address
Wednesday. August 21 at 5:30 PM
1 min. readDefunct cryptocurrency exchange Mt. Gox recently transferred 12,000 Bitcoin to a new wallet address, marking its first significant transaction since July. The move, which occurred on Aug. 20, saw $709.4 million worth of BTC sent to an address starting with '1PuQB.' Additionally, 1,265 BTC worth $74.8 million was sent to another address labeled as a Mt. Gox cold wallet. Speculation suggests that this move could indicate preparations for distributing Bitcoin to creditors who have been awaiting repayment since the exchange's 2014 hack. However, some experts, like Galaxy's head of research Alex Thorn, believe that only a portion of the funds will be distributed, with the rest being stored in cold storage. Despite distributing 68% of its funds back to creditors, Mt. Gox still holds 46,164 BTC valued at $2.7 billion. Creditors are holding onto their Bitcoin, anticipating future price increases and potential tax benefits.
